Recording Kimbra's vocals in 2020 for "A Reckoning", which just came out today!

You can see my makeshift vocal booth in the control room, complete with super sexy packing blankets and a big piece of foam nailed to the ceiling. Also Ryan Lott piping in his thoughts from afar, and Gustav capturing some backing vocals in the live room.

It was a super fun session, and I'm so excited for it to be out there in the world!

Some of this album was made by the Delicate man himself here at the Spillway. First time I saw Steve play at SXSW in 2011 I was blown away, and he’s still impressing me 11 years later.

I will soon make a regular demo video of this, one of my favorite keyboards on the planet: the Yamaha YC-45D. But I just accidentally discovered while doing some maintenance on it that by only putting back in every fifth key, you create a perfect 12-tone row.

This reminded me how essential it is to not let standards control the entire creative process. Even something as ancient and set as the chromatic piano keyboard can use an occasional tweak to uncover new ways of playing and hearing.

Removal is sometimes addition.

Gonna start cataloging the collection of keyboard instruments here at Spillway Sound. I’ll just give this disclaimer on the first one: please excuse the rudimentary playing, these are certainly not meant to display any actual keyboard skills on my part. Just the facts.

Also, this is obviously just recorded on my phone, but if you come play this thing here we’ll mic it up real nice I promise.

This installation showcases an original Mellotron M 400, serial number 131 from 1970, restored in 2016 by Jerry Korb. I start on the flute, head to the brass, then to the violins. Then when things start getting bendy I go back to the flute.
